A Special Message to the Electrical Engineering Class of 2020

Congratulations EE 2020 Graduates

On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Department of Electrical Engineering, I would like to congratulate the graduates of the Class of 2020. I especially applaud you for your fortitude in making it through this last semester. No one will ever forget the Class of 2020.

Stay healthy, and please do come back for the Commencement Ceremony next year so that we can greet you and congratulate you face to face.

To the undergraduates receiving a B.S.:
The scramble to move instruction was stressful for everyone, faculty and students alike. Fortunately, as EEs we are a bunch of nerds, so it was not as bad for us as for others around the university. I know that the faculty and staff worked hard to put their courses and labs online. I thank them for their efforts and also thank you for your patience.

As graduating seniors, you have given up a lot this year. Every day on the Notre Dame campus is precious, and you have lost half of a semester of walks on campus, visits to the Grotto, and just talking face to face with your friends and professors. We can’t give that back, but you should know that you’ll always hold a special place in our hearts. For the rest of your lives, when you say “I’m a member of the Class of 2020,” every face will immediately light up with a look of remembrance. This is a class, and a year, for the history books.

To the graduate students who have earned M.S. or Ph.D. degrees:
Congratulations for reaching this significant milestone in your academic career after much hard work and dedication, for excelling in the classroom and innovating in the laboratory, and for joining the Notre Dame alumni family. Many of you will move on to top-tier careers in industry, academia, and government, and we look forward to hearing about all your future successes. Others of you will continue in your studies in the department, and we look forward to your continued achievements in our program.

Thank you for adjusting to online instruction and remote research collaboration, for stepping up to help our faculty with instruction of undergraduate classes, and for your patience and resilience. In addition to your own educational and career development, you play vital role in the broader research and teaching mission of the Department, and we could not function without you. That is very true in general, but it has been especially true during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are extremely proud to have you as a member of the NDEE community, and we hope you will stay connected as you continue to be a force for good in the world.

— Gregory Snider, professor and chair Electrical Engineering
